Grantitude and Safety Plan - Ponderings by Paris…your school counselor

Ponderings by Paris…your school counselor

Children will mirror your responses to life so carefully look at what your children are seeing from your actions…hold that mirror in front of yourself.  Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching so may we turn our focus to the positive and remember daily what makes us grateful.  Gratitude will color your attitude in a pleasant way.  What a wonderful gift to give your child if you will help them practice the art of gratitude.  Every night or every morning make a quick list together of the things your are thankful for and save them to read on those days things don’t feel so good!  What a mood lift that you can create on your own and will cost nothing but 5 minutes of your time!

This month’s home school connection refers to how to support children in a time of crisis.  When I read it, I thought this would have been so helpful to know before 9/11 happened.  This does not mean we are planning on another major crisis in our world but having a firm plan in place can make things feel more secure!  I spent the day yesterday at the Indiana School Safety Academy with Miss Lamb.  We are the trained safety specialists in our building and we meet quarterly with our own safety team both here in the building and also at the corporation level.  It is important in this world to be on alert and be prepared for whatever may happen.  The hurricanes in Florida should also serve as reminder to us to not take things for granted and why it is important to be ready!  I hope you find the information attached to be helpful!

One last thing…Marriage Investors Family Night Out is still happening and an opportunity for fun and relationship building and it is FREE.  They meet from 6-8pm at Headstart in Franklin.  November 3, 10, 17 and December 1, 8 are the upcoming dates.  Please call 736-7840 and reserve your family’s spot.  Transportation can be provided if you need it.

I am thankful that I get to work at Northwood Elementary with all your wonderful students and the excellent staff here!  We are truly blessed with the best!  Enjoy life!

Summer Safety - Ponderings by Paris…your school counselor

Once again it is hard to imagine that another school year is coming to a rapid close.  So many wonderful things happen within a school year and to see the growth that students make is a true joy.  Thank-you for sharing your child with us this past year and trusting that we all care deeply and want what is best of your child.  Summertime schedules often allow for more freedom from structure and less guidance for many children.  I would like to offer some summer safety tips that were shared by Hammond Schools:

  • Please remember to warn and advise your children to always let you know where they will be.  Let your children know that you will check to make sure that they are where they say they will be.  Please check on occasion.
  • Require your children to “check in” with you at various times during the day.
  • Require your children to let you know whom they are with.
  • Remind them to only play with persons that they know and trust.
  • If persons that they really do not know seem to be bothering them, please ask that your children make you aware of this situation.
  • Remind them never to talk with strangers, accept any sort of gifts from strangers, and to move away from strangers immediately.  If someone acts too good to be true, they usually are.
  • Remind them to go to a place of business to ask for help if they are not close enough to home to go home safely to get help or to make their report of concern over a stranger.
  • Remind them to never accept rides of any sort from a stranger or anyone that makes them uncomfortable.
  • It is always advisable to have an emergency contact number to reach them no matter where they should be in the unlikely event you would need to have your child in your immediate presence at any specific time during an emergency situation.
  • Set specific lunch and dinner hours for your children to be home to enjoy family time, proper nourishment and of course to check in.
  • Please try to be a good neighbor and check that the children that have parents who have to work while children are on their summer vacation have the following:

    • Proper adult or older child supervision.
    • The work number in case the child needs to reach them.
    • That the employer knows that children may need to contact in any emergency situation.
