TOYOTA INTERNATIONAL TEACHER PROGRAM 2001

"EAST MEETS WEST: A BRIDGE BETWEEN NATIONS"

In December 2000, I was given an opportunity to apply for Toyota's International Teacher Program by a fellow faculty member.  After long deliberations, I was convinced to try to become one of the 50 participants from six states in the US.  In March 2001, I was informed that I was selected to represent Franklin Community High School and along with 6 other Hoosiers, we headed to California to meet our fellow educators and begin an adventure of a lifetime.

The International Teacher Program is designed to promote cooperation and forthrightness between the economic partners of the US and Japan.  The core values used for this opportunity consisted of science/technology, education, industry, environment and history.  As part of the requirements, we were instructed to design a unit for use in class exemplifying the core values of Toyota's program.  The unit I have developed is:  "East Meets West: A Bridge Between Nations."  The following is an general outline of the unit designed to introduce Japanese culture, history, education and resource management to my classes.  Also included is a link to the WEBQUEST that will be utilized to complete Japanese projects.
